When building this project, we called it “The Olde English.” The interior of the house had a heavy European style with a lot of ornate trim work. What we did was try to carry that same style trim package into the new screened addition. In keeping with that style, we used conventional framing practices, but added ornamental timber rafters and cross members, giving the project the appearance of timber style framing. The arches are true arches rather than cut-out veneer. These look great inside and out and if the customer decides to enclose the addition in the future, the full arches can kept and filled with insulation. Since we had decided on a hip roof structure, we wanted to make sure the space had as much natural light as possible. To accomplish this, we installed four velux skylights. For the flooring, we installed a tile floor with a soldier course perimeter. We continued the European style in the trim work in the “banisters” running down the stairs. To finish the look, we matched the brick work of house’s existing foundation perfectly in the addition’s foundation and stairs. The customers were very collaborative throughout the project, and we were all very happy with the finished project! For me, The interior timber-style framing along with the bead board ceiling, full arches, columns and the four-stage routed rails that I hand-milled on site, make the finished project such a standout, I often share it with customers to show them the possibilities.
